Upgrade from Linux Mint 16 Petra to Linux Mint 17 Qiana

I will be presenting the process of upgrading using the apt command line tool.

So first update the apt repositories

 sudo sed -i 's/saucy/trusty/' /etc/apt/sources.list
 sudo sed -i 's/petra/qiana/' /etc/apt/sources.list
 sudo sed -i 's/saucy/trusty/' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
 sudo sed -i 's/petra/qiana/' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

Then make the system upgrade

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get upgrade

The apt manager will ask you for keeping various configuration files during the upgrade. I chose to replace them with the new ones.

  1. On my system, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade failed to install quite a few packages and locked up the system. I was able to get to a terminal after rebooting and run sudo apt-get upgrade, but it would not run. It suggested running sudo apt-get -f install. This forced the missing packages to install. Then successfully ran sudo apt-get upgrade and I am up and running again.

  2. Need to also include:

    sudo sed -i ‘s/saucy/trusty/’ /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-source-repositories.list
    sudo sed -i ‘s/petra/qiana/’ /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-source-repositories.list

if source repositories are included, and:

    sudo sed -i ‘s/saucy/trusty/’ /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list
    sudo sed -i ‘s/petra/qiana/’ /etc/apt/sources.list.d/getdeb.list
